The WVU Tech Golden Bears are the athletic teams that represent the West Virginia University Institute of Technology, located in Beckley, West Virginia.[1] The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)[2], primarily competing in the River States Conference (RSC) since the 2015–16 academic year.[3]
The Golden Bears previously competed as an NAIA Independent within the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) from 2012–13 to 2014–15; and in the Mid-South Conference (MSC) from 2006–07 to 2011–12.
History
WVU Tech historically competed in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), which is currently affiliated with the NCAA Division II ranks, with the other small colleges in the state from its inception in 1924–25 until the end of the 2005–06 school year, when it could no longer maintain that level of competition. They also competed as a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) from 2012–13 to 2015–16.
WVU Tech competes in 17 intercollegiate varsity sports: Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, track & field and wrestling; while women's sports include basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, track & field and volleyball; and co-ed sports include cheerleading and eSports.[4] Former sports were football, which it was dropped as a result of the Revitalization Study after 2011.[5]

Accomplishments
The university's sports teams has had a number of National Championship appearances and wins over the years. The men's soccer team won the the USCAA National Championship in 2013 & 2014[6] and were runners-up in 2012.[7] The men's soccer team were also runners-up in the RSC Championship for 2024-2025.[8] The golf team finished its 2024-2025 season as runners-up at the RSC Championship.[9] The eSports Team, in the game of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege won a National Championship for the year 2023-2024, winning the title National Esports Collegiate Conference Navigators National Champions.[10]

The university's mascot is the Golden Bear, who is named Monty. The bear can be seen at sporting and community events.
