Wikipedia Ads on Linux (And an Alternative Method on Windows)

Maybe you use Linux or Windows and you want to create a Wikipedia Ad, but you don't know how. Well, I'm here to help! Follow the steps below.

Downloading GIMP

If it isn't already installed on your computer, download and install GIMP (A free open-source image editor) from https://www.gimp.org/downloads or use your operating system's package/software manager.

Open GIMP.

Creating the images

To create the images, go to File > New, and set the dimensions to 468x60 pixels for the ads. Now, create the images. This guide does not cover creating images. For that, there are plenty of guides online. Each time you finish an image, save it as, for instance, Image01.png, Image02.png, Image03.png, etc. on a designated location on your computer.

Lacing together the images

Go to File > Open as Layers. Select the images you created, and click Open. Organize your images so they are in the correct order (It starts from the bottom layer and works its way up as it goes through the animation). Next, go to Filters > Animation > Optimize (for GIF). By default on GIMP, each layer is displayed for 100 ms. You can change this value if you wish, something I would recommend for Wikipedia Ads.

After organizing the images, go to Filters > Animation > Playback... and you can view a preview of the animation.

Saving and adding

Save the file (File > Save As...), and export it (File > Export As...). When you export the file, make sure it it's formatted as a gif and not a png. Also make sure that the "Animation" selection is activated. Then, export the image! Follow the directions of the Wikipedia Ads for uploading the newly created image. You're done!
