Question from IAmMoonknight (13:39, 28 December 2024)

Hello! I want to contribute to the Dubai pages on the site but I dont know how to get started. What are the suggested things to include? --IAmMoonknight (talk) 13:39, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and welcome, @IAmMoonknight. I've put some links on your talk page to help you get started. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that Wikipedia articles should summarize what reliable independent sources have said about a topic. The WP:Task center offers ideas on areas where you can contribute while you learn how to edit. Hope that helps! Schazjmd (talk) 13:47, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey sir ive decided to help people by editing wiikipedia and also to build a few extracurriculars for my college, i just needed to ask if i am editing the page is it needed that the information sources can be any website or book.. Thanks Regards --Adhvik Sharma (talk) 08:41, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and welcome, @Adhvik Sharma. The reliable sources guideline explains the types of sources we can use for articles, as well as which types of sources to avoid. Please take some time to read that, then feel free to ask me if you have more questions. I've also put some links on your talk page to help you get started. Hello Schazjmd, This is to let you know that one of your recent edit at Amy Wax caused a citation error.

Do not add invalid url and use preview before saving your edit. Happy editing.––kemel49(connect)(contri) 11:52, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Why you revert

I got the source from the book "Free as in Freedom". Gnu779 (talk) 13:07, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gnu779, as I said in my edit summary, you put information in the infobox that isn't reflected/sourced in body, plus the infobox instructions for parents say "include only if they are independently notable or particularly relevant". Schazjmd (talk) 14:04, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But it was an accident I forgot to add a citation. Gnu779 (talk) 14:06, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gnu779, you could add his parents' names to the Personal life section in the article with a citation to your source. They don't belong in the infobox though. Schazjmd (talk) 14:11, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Removed Update

Hello, you removed an update I made to the "Patriotic Millionaires" page, which I believe was a mistake. I added 1 descriptive word, "hypocrites" when describing this group. I added this after reading an article about this group of ultra-rich people behind "Patriotic Millionaires", who self-describe themselves as wealthy Americans who leverage their influence to affect politics stated that ultra rich should stop meddling in democracy (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/01/22/super-rich-must-stop-meddling-in-democracy-disney-heiress/). Can you please add this back? 47.150.84.191 (talk) 00:04, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, unless you have reliable sources that regularly characterize the group as "hypocritical", it is not an appropriate label for the article. Schazjmd (talk) 00:14, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your feedback, Schazjmd.
The group's actions directly contradict their stated goal. The Disney heiress calls for the "super-rich" to stop meddling in democracy, yet she supports a group—Patriotic Millionaires—that promotes the use of wealth and influence to shape economic policy. This is a clear contradiction: while advocating against wealthy influence in politics, the group actively engages in it. This behavior fits the definition of hypocrisy—claiming one thing while doing the opposite. The group’s actions undermine the very democratic process they claim to want to protect. Therefore, labeling them as hypocritical is not only appropriate but also necessary to reflect this irony. 47.150.84.191 (talk) 00:21, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Articles summarize what reliable sources say about a subject. An editor's opinion doesn't belong in the article. Schazjmd (talk) 00:28, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do want to thank you, though, for raising the issue for discussion rather than edit-warring. It's refreshing. Schazjmd (talk) 00:28, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The contradiction between the heiress's call for the "super-rich" to stop meddling in democracy and her involvement in a group that uses wealth to influence policy is a clear example of hypocrisy. This isn’t just an opinion, but an observable contradiction that should be noted for accuracy.
By not addressing this, the article risks reflecting a left-leaning bias, which Wikipedia has been criticized for recently. It's important to highlight this contradiction to ensure the article is balanced and reflects all relevant aspects of the group’s actions. 47.150.84.191 (talk) 00:39, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You can try starting a discussion at Talk:Patriotic Millionaires Maybe other editors will agree with you and you'll get a consensus to include it. Schazjmd (talk) 02:02, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Schazjmd, just wanted to thank you for creating the article's talk page! I wanted to respond on Wikipedia:Teahouse itself; however, it appears that it is extended-protected, hence, I cannot reply there.

I understand contentious/disruptive editing and/or vandalism is the reason behind this; however, the fact that it hampers the ability of new editors to make constructive edits and prevents them from posing inquiries is a major deterrence. I hope the editors behind the update understand that an alternative solution would be appreciated.

Regardless, I'm obliged, User:Schazjmd! Regards, 2311173DasguptaRajdeep (talk) 16:09, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, @2311173DasguptaRajdeep. Unfortunately, Teahouse had to be protected for 12 hours due to persistent problems with a long-term abuser. If you have questions as you're editing, Wikipedia:Help desk is another option, and you're welcome to ask here as well. Cheers! Schazjmd (talk) 16:20, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Katiedevi (02:24, 4 February 2025)

Hi! I loved your page on 'The $64 Tomato'. I was wondering if you could share some tips on how you decide what to include in the book summary please? And perhaps any general advice you would give for a newcomer like me? --Katiedevi (talk) 02:24, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, @Katiedevi! And welcome to wikipedia.
I've struggled with summary/plot sections when I write articles about nonfiction books. It really depends on the book. Some (like $64 Tomato) lend themselves to really concise summaries. Other books, like Evil Geniuses, I didn't feel like I could really explain it without getting into details. But which details are important is the challenge. I was so stuck when I wrote about Only Yesterday, I gave up and let the Book-of-the-Month Club speak about it. There are some tips in the guideline "How to write a plot summary".
I'll leave some links on your talk page to help you get started. For general advice, the most important suggestion I can give is to read the backend stuff: wikipedia policies, guidelines, essays, noticeboards, talk pages, etc. Making an edit to a page is a simple mechanic; making an edit to a page that won't be reverted can be challenging. You have to absorb what editors think is important, what they consider to be good reasons for including or excluding something, what makes something a good source or a bad one. I spent a lot of time when I began just fixing spelling errors, because I figured nobody could object to that.
Feel free to ask me questions anytime you want, or you can always ask at the Teahouse or the Help desk. Hope that helps! Schazjmd (talk) 14:54, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
These are some really helpful insights, thank you so much! I love the detail on the Evil Geniuses page! Katiedevi (talk) 00:57, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hello, Quick question. The article TWA Moonliner has multiple references that I think are cited incorrectly. Could you please check it out? I am not familiar with that style of citation. Thank you, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 15:45, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @CF-501 Falcon. What the editor(s) did was cite general references without providing inline references. (Not uncommon for very old articles.) Actually fixing it requires obtaining all of those sources and connecting them manually to information in the article. They all seem to be offline periodicals, so it isn't an easy task. I've added a maintenance tag to the article that points out the problem. Schazjmd (talk) 15:51, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Thank you. Side note: I did end up enabling Twinkle as you had suggested, it is very helpful. Cheers, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 17:24, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska "Non-partisan primary" info box note

Thanks for checking in on it [1]. I'm coming to your talk page because I don't think this rises to the level of filling the article talk page.

It does make sense to not use redirects there, however, that was the only way I could figure out how to make it more clear that AK is using a jungle primary. If we could make it "Non-partisan (jungle) primary" I think that would be much better. If this is technically possible in the info box, would you be agreeable to that change?

A month or two ago, we make a compromise consensus to change the name from "Non-partisan blanket primary" to what it is now. All parties either agreed or did not argue against that it is commonly called a jungle primary, however, few wanted to just retitle to that. The article title is currently being reworked, and after some time, I'm sure many will come around to just titling it "Jungle primary". In the mean time, I want readers to understand what the link is before they click it, so as to prevent WP:astonish. 76.178.169.118 (talk) 19:18, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Could you link me to the "compromise consensus" discussion? Maybe then I'll understand the reasoning. Schazjmd (talk) 19:29, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, sorry for not doing so previously. It started here [2] with my Talk message, then a requested move was made by me [3], with some discussion and a wp:NOTCURRENTTITLE conclusion. Not adding "jungle" to the title, but removing "blanket" was the compromise. 76.178.169.118 (talk) 19:34, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How about if I add a mention of the alternate name to that section? (I'm in WA, which also has nonpartisan primaries, and had never heard "jungle primary" before now.) Schazjmd (talk) 19:46, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever you think is best is fine with me. I just think the current title is still not quite right, so I'm just tying to help readers understand differences, get to the the right links, and not be surprised after they click through.
I would say, the terminology does seem to be in flux. I've pretty much only heard jungle primary, but that might be because every time I read or talk about it, it's in a California context. You can even see, a good number of news articles have called it a "California style jungle primary" (as if there's a different style of jungle primary, when obviously there is not). Maybe people will settle eventually on "non-partisan primary", but outside of imprecise local contexts, I highly doubt it, since there are a variety of kinds. I fully expect Non-partisan primary to change names again in the next few years. 76.178.169.118 (talk) 19:58, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It does look like the terminology is all over the place. This site's description of "jungle primary" only seems to match Louisiana's approach, not like Alaska's which seems to combine top-4 non-partisan primary with ranked-choice general[4] – I don't think there's even a label for that combo yet. Anyway, I added the altname to Alaska's article. Schazjmd (talk) 20:08, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is this some weird glitch or something?

hello, I saw that you reverted my edit where I bolded a heading and said in your edit summary that headings are always bolded. But if that's the case, why did it register unbolded for me? It may be a glitch for me but glitches usually affect all instances of that thing, not just a single instance. All of the headings were bolded except for that specific one, is there a reason to that? Otherwise that's very weird.Yelps (talk) 15:56, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Yelps. Poking around, I see that the Confirmed users heading was using H5 instead of H4 like the others; that's the only reason I can think of that it wouldn't display properly in mobile view (it was fine in desktop view). I just changed it to H4, like the other subheadings in that section, and now it's bold in both desktop and mobile view. Schazjmd (talk) 16:30, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
