Unconverted urls

Many thanks for some good work on Thomas Fairfax. Please can you remember not to leave unconverted urls. We generally don't like unconverted urls per WP:BAREURL, although it is good you are leaving additional information. There are quite a few unconverted urls on Gregory Clement, Hercules Huncks and Robert Lilburne as well. Thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 10:39, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Sure. In this example the url remains bare:[1] but in this example you cannot see the url.[2] In the article on John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, which is a featured article, you cannot see the urls. If you are talking about enclosing the URl in brackets, I'm familiar with this.
However, I see that a number of my citations have been changed to a completely different format that I can't work with, as well as setting up potential edit conflicts. I will not be able to continue if these are not reverted. Lois Hacker (talk) 13:05, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a matter of enclosing the url in brackets: it is a matter of making them invisible. I have already done it for you for all references that you have added. I see that I will not be able to continue with this. I find that I can not undo the changes from the History page. The rewrite as I have planned it would take weeks. The potential for edit conflicts adds too much wasted time. Lois Hacker (talk) 13:23, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - That's a pity. There is a simple alternative which is not as good. If you have a URL (web page) link, you can add it to the title part of the citation, so that when you add the citation to Wikipedia the URL becomes hidden and the title becomes clickable. To do this, enclose the URL and the title in square brackets—the URL first, then a space, then the title. For example:[1] Dormskirk (talk) 13:29, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia: BAREURL "Wikipedia:Citation templates are popular but not required. Any method showing more information than is present in the URL itself is not a bare URL. Full citations are preferred, but even an incomplete citation is not necessarily a bare URL. Some citation styles, such as the MLA style, use full bibliographic citation that happen to display the text of the URL in addition to proper identifying information, like the author, date, and title of the publication.
