The Tea Leaf - Issue Three

Hi! Welcome to the third edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse reaches two month mark. The Teahouse has been live on English Wikipedia for two months now and evidence of the project's impact is beginning to show. Thank you to the hosts and Wikipedians who have helped make the Teahouse the valuable place for new editor's to seek help and feel welcome.
  • April metrics report has been posted on meta! Some relevant metrics from April’s report include:
  • In April, Teahouse averaged 45 questions per week.
  • An average of 20 new editors visiting for the first time were served at the Teahouse, in addition to repeat guests.
Wikipedia Teahouse always keeps it classy!
  • Many guests are repeat visitors: the average guest asks 1.5 questions and 22% of guests ask more than one question.
  • Reports show that the Teahouse is having a positive impact on editor engagement! Comparing a sample of 75 new editors who participate in the Teahouse with a control group (of equivalent size and similar first-day editing activity) shows:
  • New editors who participate in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles than the uninvited control group.
  • New editor participants also make an average six times more global edits.
  • Average Teahouse participants add 26 times more bytes of content that survive on Wikipedia (meaning content that isn't reverted or deleted) than the uninvited control group.
  • More Teahouse participants remain active on Wikipedia at least 10 days later. Among the 224 editors in our three experimental groups, 28 percent of new editors who participate in the Teahouse were still active on Wikipedia at least ten days later, compared with 12 percent who received an invitation but didn't actively participate in the Teahouse, and only 5 percent from a similar uninvited control group.
  • Teahouse visibility is a challenge, as we try to make the Teahouse visible to new editors, invitation has been the the main way of informing new editors about the Teahouse, and while that is a powerful tool, many new editors go uninvited. Input on Teahouse link placement is welcome! (Join in on the conversation here.)
  • Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

Self-identification for caste

Hi, Just now you posted your comment here:Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Photo_montages_in_infoboxes_of_caste.2Fcommunity_articles. But I'm doubtful why we are stressing for self-identification in the case of caste. Are we equating caste to a religion? --AshLey Msg 15:51, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

The reason is clear, many people don't want to associate with any caste. — Bill william comptonTalk 02:27, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello Bill william compton. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Houla Masscare, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Contains sufficient content to be a stub. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 19:16, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Scotland Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, New York City Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The Tea Leaf - Issue Four

Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

  • What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
  • ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
  • Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
  • 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

Annie Lanzillotto

I'm not sure how to answer on my talk page -- I hope this is correct. I received a message from you about citations. I just added more than one reliable source, or reference, I think. Can you let me know how I am doing? If I'm doing this correctly? I really want to learn how to do this correctly. Thanks so much! -Samantha Srdemuro (talk) 15:36, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Samantha, and welcome to Wikipedia! Citations you have added are fine and enough to avoid any WP:PROD, but it still needs more references, like "Early Years" section is still unsourced. I have to say that article is in very good shape considering an output of newbie. For any further queries the best place is WP:Teahouse. — Bill william comptonTalk 16:19, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Hey Bill william compton! I've added many more references since we've last talked. Can you check and see how I'm doing with Annie Lanzillotto? Srdemuro (talk) 18:19, 28 June 2012 (UTC) Srdemuro (talk) 13:48, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Few points:
  1. Don't use external links in the body of the article (read WP:EXTLINK).
  2. Use properly formatted citations (read WP:CITE).
  3. Try to find more reliable and independent sources like newspapers' articles, magazines, secondary and tertiary sources (read WP:RS)).
  4. Don't overlink. Avoid linking common terms like writer, welfare, theatre, etc (read WP:LINK).
  5. Take a look at our notability guidelines (like WP:AUTHOR, WP:NM, etc).
Feel free to contact me for any further assistance. — Bill william comptonTalk 13:57, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Good luck! Help

Hi...I found your comments on the talk page User talk:122.108.141.223. This particular user has vandalized a lot of pages related to 2010 Commonwealth Games including Boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games – Light welterweight and India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Even the picture in Boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Manoj Kumar (boxer) and Bradley Saunders was vandalized. The user exchanged the gold and silver medals in the picture. The original picture is this File:Boxing winners at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.png

I am relatively new at Wikipedia and am really amazed at how much information this user has distorted. I put up a warning on his talk page but dont know what else to do...especially about the edited images. Please help. Thank you! Sayan rc (talk) 00:18, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you be a little more specific about the problem? Is s/he adding factually incorrect information to the pages? And, what's the discrepancy in the picture? — Bill william comptonTalk 04:24, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes...the gold medal in Manoj Kumar (boxer)'s hand (the person second from left) has been photoshopped to a silver medal and the silver medal of Bradley Saunders (the leftmost person)is replaced by a gold medal in the pages Boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Manoj Kumar (boxer) and Bradley Saunders. And on the basis of this picture s/he has added factually incorrect information to atleast half a dozen pages...announcing it was Bradley Saunders who won gold in the event instead of Manoj Kumar (boxer) who originally won. I reverted the page edits with appropriate references but dont know what to do with the pics. Sayan rc (talk) 16:06, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification. I've nominated all the uploads by this problematic user for deletion. — Bill william comptonTalk 16:56, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Special report: Reforming the education programs: lessons from Cairo
Wikipedia has a long history of collaborating with educational institutions. The Schools and universities program — international and in many languages, but dominated by US institutions — started in 2003 and evolved case by case with little system. However, that changed in 2009 as Wikimedia embarked on its formal strategic process, and outreach in higher education came to be seen in terms of achieving explicit goals — especially that of increasing editor participation.
  • News and notes: Russian Wikipedia blackout; WMF tools; Wikitravel proposal revisited
The Russian Wikipedia has been blacked out for 24 hours, ending 20:00 UTC Tuesday, as a protest against Russian State Duma Bill 89417-6, a bill currently before the Duma (the Russian parliament). Visitors to the Russian Wikipedia are confronted by the sign above in protest at a draconian internet censorship bill before the Duma. The Russian word for Wikipedia is crossed out in this banner, and the text says: "Imagine a world without free knowledge. The State Duma is currently conducting the second reading of a bill to amend the "Law on Information", which has the potential to lead to the creation of extra-judicial censorship of the Internet in Russia, including the closure of access to the Russian Wikipedia. Today, the Wikipedia community protests against censorship as a threat to free knowledge that is open to all mankind. We ask that you oppose this bill."

The results from last month's trial of the LastModified extension were published this week on the Wikimedia blog. The first analyses have indicated a significant positive impact, suggesting that the extension – which makes the time since a page's last edit much more prominent in the interface – could eventually find its way onto Wikimedia wikis.

CSD on Danny Stimpson

Hi, I wanted to let you know that I have challenged your WP:CSD A7 on Danny Stimpson. The article claims he is a professional footballer, which is a claim of importance sufficient to satisfy the low threshold of criteria A7. He likely would not pass the stricter notability criteria, but that is a matter for either a prod or AfD nomination. I have also BLPPRODed the article. Monty845 16:23, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

As Wikimania, the annual conference targeted at Wikimedians and often well attended by those with a technical slant, draws to a close, comments have already begun to come in from attendees regarding the many tech-related features of the conference.
  • Arbitration report: Fæ faces site-ban, proposed decisions posted
No cases were closed or opened, leaving the number of open cases at three. A new remedy in the Fæ case calls for him to be indefinitely banned from the site after his attempts to solicit intervention from the Foundation, claiming that publicly listing all his accounts would be too onerous due to "ongoing security risks." He was further criticised for attempting to dodge good-faith concerns; the committee believes that if Fæ's claims are valid then he must be removed from the community.

Teahouse!

Hi Bill. I hope you are doing well. I noticed you haven't been that active in the Teahouse for quite sometime. No problem, of course. I do hope things are going well for you in other areas of Wikipedia, and offline as well! I have taken the liberty of moving your profile to the host breakroom for the time being. Feel free to move it back to the main host page whenever you are ready to jump back in. See ya =) Sarah (talk) 17:24, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Paid editing: Does Wikipedia pay? The skeptic: Orange Mike
Does Wikipedia pay? is an ongoing Signpost series seeking to illuminate paid editing, paid advocacy, for-profit Wikipedia consultants, editing public relations professionals, conflict of interest guidelines in practice, and the Wikipedians who work on these issues... by speaking openly with the people involved.
  • From the editor: Signpost developments
The Signpost's goal is to provide readers with essential information about the Wikimedia movement and the English Wikipedia – both of which have become large and extremely complex institutions that require timely, balanced and in-depth coverage.
  • News and notes: Chapter head speaks about the aftermath of Russian Wikipedia shutdown
Two weeks ago the Signpost reported that the Russian Wikipedia had just begun a 24-hour blackout in protest at a bill that was before the Russian parliament that proposed mechanisms to block IP addresses and DNS records. The protest, implemented after on-wiki consensus was reached during the preceding days, concerned the potential of the amendment to the information law to allow extra-judicial censorship of the internet in Russia, including the closure of access to the Russian Wikipedia. Among the questions now are how effective the blackout was and where we go from here in terms of internet freedom in one of the world's biggest and most influential countries.
  • WikiProject report: Summer sports series: WikiProject Olympics
With the 2012 Summer Olympic Games beginning this weekend in London, we decided to catch up with the chaps at WikiProject Olympics. The last time we interviewed WikiProject Olympics was in February 2010 when the project was gearing up for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. We wanted to know how the project has grown since then and whether preparing for a Summer Olympics was more grueling.
  • Op-ed: The future of PR on Wikipedia
There has never been a better time to improve the behavior of marketing professionals on Wikipedia. For the first time we're seeing self-imposed statements of ethics. Professional PR bodies around the globe have supported the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) guidance for ethical Wikipedia engagement. Although their tone is different, CREWE and the PRSA have brought more attention to the issues. Awareness among PR professionals is rising. So are the number of paid editing operations sprouting up and the opportunity for dialogue.
  • Featured content: When is an island not an island?
One featured article was promoted this week, Melville Island. A small peninsula in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, it was discovered by Europeans in the 1600s and initially used for storehouses. The land was purchased by the British and used to hold prisoners of war, then to receive escaped slaves from the United States. After being used as a place of quarantine and later a recruitment centre, the land was granted to Canada in 1907 and used to house prisoners of war. It is now home to the clubhouse and marina of the Armdale Yacht Club.

India at 2012 Summer Olympics

Thanks for deleting the Knocked Out table. I also suggested removing this table as it is very difficult to maintain and is very ambiguous. Prateek (talk) 12:10, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Daniel Hughes (musician) "Speedy Deletion"

Dear Sir,

I am writing because I received the following email:

"Dear MaestroHughes,

"The Wikipedia page "User talk:MaestroHughes" has been created on 30 July 2012 by Bill william compton, with the edit summary: Notification: speedy deletion nomination of [[Daniel Hughes (musician)]]. (TW)

"This is a new page. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MaestroHughes for the current revision.

"To contact the editor, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bill_william_compton

"Note that additional changes to the page "User talk:MaestroHughes" will not result in any further notifications, until you have logged in and visited the page.

I am more than upset, for there is NO copyright infringement, since the page I was creating was about ME! I AM DANIEL HUGHES! I log in name is MaestroHughes. I created this page under that log in a while back, but it never showed up in any searches on Wikipedia. I did some homework, and found the best way to create a page (since I guessed I had done it incorrectly) was to do a search for an item or name, and then click on the red sentence that says one can create a page. I did a search for "Daniel Hughes (musician" with the hope of creating that page, and finally being found in a Wikipedia search. Instead, I get an alert saying it will be deleted. Please advise what I should do! (On a side note, the original page I created that never showed up [which had a title of "User:MaestroHughes" has been stripped clean to zero content. I couldn't figure out how to actually delete the whole thing.)

Your help would be greatly appreciated. And please do not delete the page!
