The rules of the land were not divine intervention from an omniscient being. They are fallible guidelines determined often long ago by potentially weak consensus, which need to sometimes be ignored.

Thoughts on NHOCKEY and related AfD's
WP:NHOCKEY sucks, it's ambiguously worded, and fails to clarify on which players are immediately presumed to meet the criterion. The current consensus presumes all players with a single second of ice time in the NHL, KHL, SHL, Liiga and ELH to be inherently notable, but a player with several hundred games played in the AHL is not. Seems silly to me.
I am not interested in AfD'ing pages of players who play primarily outside of the United States and Canada. I think the vast majority of said articles are incredibly hard to determine whether or not they meet WP:GNG because of language barriers. I am also not interested in AfD'ing articles based on WP:TOOSOON/WP:CRYSTAL, once the player hangs up the skates, then I'm interested. When I find stubs of retired players, I try to improve them first, if that improvement doesn't lead to a passable article, or isn't possible, then I initiate an AfD.
