Description
English: Half-figure, sitting, looking to right, with white neck cloth, white waistcoat, and dark coat.

This is believed to be a Romney, and is thought to have been painted about the same time as the portrait of his wife. There are two entries in the Diary of 1795, Feb. 21 and 25, which read " Mr. Simpson," but they may be intended for "Mrs. Simpson."

The sitter was the son of Henry Bridgeman, 1st Baron Bradford, and Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Rev. John Simpson of Stoke Hall, co. Derby. He was born May 13, 1763 and assumed, by act of parliament, the surname and arms of Simpson only. He died June 5, 1850. He was married, first, on June 3, 1784 to Henrietta, daughter of Sir Thomas Worsley; she died in 1791. He married, secondly, on November 27, 1793, Grace, daughter of Samuel Estwick.
