Question from OnyxxRaven (07:59, 19 January 2026)
Hi,
I was wondering what the rules are for adding a photo of an american patended invention made in 1875. Would it be public domain, and in turn would I technically "own" the photo, or can I simply check the "i own this photo" when adding images to wiki pages I have written? Thank you! Link to the patent below.

- @OnyxxRaven: Due to the age of the photo, this image should be well in the public domain under {{PD-US}}. It should also meet {{PD-US-patent-no notice}}. You should be able to upload the file directly to Commons using their Upload Wizard. You can follow the questions and select the option that states the image is no longer covered by copyright and you can include the tags I used here as to why. Also, you would not own the image. The image is in public domain and can now be used by anyone. cyberdog958Talk 21:48, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
Question from Cookiejardino on Nick Drake (08:09, 19 January 2026)
Hello! I was reviewing the page on Nick Drake, specifically the "Early Life" section. I noticed that some statements attributed to others about him are cited using only "Dann, 2006," and this citation appears multiple times. My question is whether this type of citation is considered acceptable. There are no links provided, only the name and year. Would it not be more appropriate to include links to the interviews, for instance? This current method gives the impression of speculation, and I wonder if such a practice is permissible. --Cookiejardino (talk) 08:09, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Cookiejardino: Those references appear like that because that article are using shortened footnotes as its method for references. Shortened footnotes are a good style if a reference is going to be used throughout the article multiple times as it reduces the overall size in bytes of the page. The reference first points to the notes section (where the
Dann (2006)text is written), and then you reference the actual references section where we can find the actual citation by the authors last name (in this case its the 4th citation in the reference section). If you have any other questions, you can ask me here or ask over at the Teahouse. cyberdog958Talk 21:31, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

Question from BeeTwoBee (00:46, 30 January 2026)
Hi! Thanks for being assigned as my mentor. I am new to Wikipedia editing and want to make sure I follow community norms and policies correctly, particularly around conflict of interest. I have a professional affiliation that I plan to disclose and intend to limit my involvement to Talk page suggestions rather than direct edits.
Do you have any general advice or best practices for using article Talk pages effectively in COI situations, especially when proposing neutral, source-based clarifications? --BeeTwoBee (talk) 00:46, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
