Description Barral and Bixio 1850 plate - Udvar-Hazy Center, Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia, USA. French plate from the 1800s. MM. Jacques Alexandre Bixio and Jean Augustin Barral made two scientific ascents. They ascended from the Paris Observatory on June 29, 1850, at 10.27 A.M., the balloon being inflated with hydrogen gas; on July 27, 1850, they repeated the experiment.
